In his Despatch No. 200 of 15th. May last

Sir William J. Gascoigne Informed you that he had granted kir. (now Sir Paul) Chater, C.M.C., six months' leave of absence

from both Councils. In his telegram of the 17th. of that

month he asked your permission to appoint Mr. Whitehead a

Member of Executive Council temporarily and during Sir Paul

Chater's absence. This permission was granted.

3.

On Mr. Whitehead's departure from the

Colony Sir W. J. Gascoigne infomed you in his Despatch No.

249 of the 12th. June that he had provisionally appointed Mr.

Sharp an Unofficial Member of Executive Council during Mr.

Whitehead's absence. This was done in order to ensure that if

Mr. Whitehead returned to the Colony he might resume his

temporary seat on Executive Council pending the return of Sir

Paul Chater.
